How to use Corbis Image Database

What are the royalty free images? ( http://www.corbisimages.com/newtocorbis/rf/options.asp )

Searching for royalty free images? (http://www.corbisimages.com/search/ReadyToBuyEvents/fstDefault.asp)

Searching using a keyword, boolean, or advanced technique? How do you go about navigating through your seach results?

Keyword Searching

  • Enter one or more keywords in the Royalty Free Search box and click 'GO' to search our extensive collection of images.
  • If you've entered more than one keyword, we will first search for any images that contain the phrase. If no results are obtained, a broad search will be conducted automatically for any images that contain one or more of the keywords.
  • Search Results will display in the right hand frame.
  • Refine Your Search using the suggested topics displayed in the left menu.
  • To narrow your search results, use our Boolean Search features.
  • Image results are displayed in the right hand frame after conducting a search. Customize the number of images displayed on each page of search results by clicking on 'Display Options.'

Boolean Searching

  • Search for a Phrase

Enter a series of words to search on a phrase. Example: type 'sports events' to find that phrase. Since the search is not case-sensitive, this is equivalent to a search for 'Sports Events.' If no images are found containing the phrase, another search will be performed automatically for images related to 'sports' OR 'events.'

  • (*) Single Asterisk

Use a single asterisk (*) as a wildcard to look for words that begin with the same letters. Example: Type key* to find 'key', 'keying', 'keyhole', 'keyboard', and so on.

  • (**) Double Asterisk

Use a double asterisk (**) to look for all forms of a word. Example: Type fly** to match 'fly', 'flew', 'flown', and 'flying.'

  • 'AND' Operator

Separate keywords with AND to locate only images that contain all your keywords. Example: Type 'fast AND car' to find images related to both 'fast' and 'car.'

  • 'OR' Operator

Separate keywords with OR to locate all images related to one or more of your keywords. (The images don't need to be catalogued with all the words.) Example: Type 'fast OR car' to find images related to either 'fast' or 'car.'

  • 'AND NOT' Operator

Use the words AND NOT between keywords to target your search. Example: Type 'cat AND NOT dog,' to find images related to 'cat' which have no reference to 'dog.'

  • "Double Quotes"

Use double quotes if you want to use OR, AND, or AND NOT literally. Example: Type "houses and parks" to find images catalogued with the phrase 'houses and parks.' Without the double quotes, this query would use the AND operator instead of looking for the phrase.

  • '( )' Parenthesis

Use '( )' parenthesis to control the order in which queries are processed. Expressions contained within parenthesis will be processed first. Example: Type '(fast OR car) AND NOT red' to find all images that are related to 'fast' or 'car' but do not contain the keyword 'red.' On the other hand, the query 'fast OR (car AND NOT red)' will return images that contain 'fast' or 'cars that are not red'. This subtle change in construction can yield very different results.

Advanced Searching

The Advanced Search selection provides access to Search Filters and Recent Searches.

  •  Search Filters

To narrow your search, select filters from the form provided, enter keywords into the Royalty Free Search box and click GO. The following filters may be used in any combination and will apply only to the current search.

  • Orientation

Select from Portrait or Landscape filters to restrict results by image orientation.

  • Format

Select from Color or Black & White filters to restrict results by color of image.

  • Search In

Select from one or more image categories to narrow your search. If a filtered search does not return any images, try a less restrictive set of filters or try Refine your Search using our intelligent indexing system.

  • Recent Searches

For your convenience, we store the last ten (10) searches you entered into the Royalty Free Search box. To rerun a previous search, select Recent Search and choose the search term from the left menu.

Leader's Guide

Tips for Leaders
  • Recommend that new users of PowerPoint and the Internet attend a pre-session offered a 1/2 hour before the main session. At this session, offer guided practice using the following tutorials.
  • Provide a computer with Web and PowerPoint access for every 1-2 participants.
  • After demonstrating the use of image databases, allow adequate time for individual exploration.
  • Plan adequate time for participants to design a project integrating these new concepts.
  • Offer a follow-up session a few days to a week after completing this module so participants may ask questions and share ideas.
  • Review Ismat Abdal-Haqq's Characteristics of Effective Professional Development from "Making Time for Teacher Professional Development." Eric Digest, October 1, 1996.
Professional Development:
-is ongoing
-includes training, practice, and feedback; opportunities for individual reflection and group inquiry into practice; and coaching or other follow-up procedures
-is school-based and embedded in teacher work
-is collaborative, providing opportunities for teachers to interact with peers
-focuses on student learning, which should, in part, guide assessment of its effectiveness
-encourages and supports school-based and teacher initiatives
-is rooted in the knowledge base for teaching
-incorporates constructivist approaches to teaching and learning
-recognizes teachers as professionals and adult learners
-provides adequate time and follow-up support
-is accessible and inclusive
