Web Design with Dreamweaver
Define a Site

   Define a Site

Dreamweaver is more than a Web page editor because it is designed to help you manage entire Web sites. In order to do that, Dreamweaver needs to know where you are saving your html pages and assets (images and documents) to be used in your Web site.

1. Create folders: Before you begin using Dreamweaver, you should create a folder on your computer to store your Web pages and files. Inside the main folder, you may also want to create a folder for images and another for documents. The directory might look like this example:

2. Define Your Site

Use Dreamweaver to define the site, designating those folders as the location for your site files. The site is a folder on your computer that will contain all the pages that you create along with sub folders for graphics and/or any other assets that you will use.

  • On your desktop make a new folder named anynamesite or anything you want to name it with one word, no spaces or special characters.
  • Open Dreamweaver
  • On the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose Site > New Site or Site > Manage Sites > New
  • In the Site definition window, for this exercise, you need only name the site (any short name you want, but it is best not to name it the same as the folder) and browse to the new shortname folder on your desktop

3. Publishing Your Site

If you will be publishing your site, that is, transferring your site to a Web server, then you will supply Remote Info when you define your site. For example, if you use FTP then you will need the following information for Dreamweaver:
