Web Design with Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver from Adobe (formerly Macromedia) is part of the Studio suite of Web desgin and management software:

  • Dreamweaver for managing Web sites and making Web pages, Fireworks for image editing (important for Web work but not for this workshop) plus Freehand and Flash (which you won't need for this workshop).
  • The version used for this tutorial is Studio MX 2004 and runs on both mac and windows computers.

Planning
A Web site is a collection of web pages and any assets (pictures, graphics, text files, templates, etc.) used in that site. Even if you create only one page, that page is part of a site.

Think about purpose, audience, content, curriculum standards, local web publication guidelines, local design conventions, your own design elements, and file directory structure.

Download these pages to help with planning.

The Dreamweaver Environment
Dreamweaver is state-of-the-art software for editing Web pages and managing Web sites. Any powerful tool has a learning curve, and Dreamweaver has more features than you are ever likely to use. Begin with the basics.
Define a Site
Before you create a page, you should Define a Site. The site is a folder on your computer that will contain all the pages that you create along with sub folders for graphics and/or any other assets that you will use.
Create a Web Page
After defining a site, create a Web page using tables, text, images, and hyperlinks.
