Web Design with Dreamweaver
Tables

Insert a Table to Layout a Page

  • Place the cursor in the Design window.
  • Use the Insert tab and select Table.
  • Format the Table to layout the page as it will look.

Use the Table window to format a table:
    Rows are across, horizontal.
    Columns are down, vertical.
Table width is defined in percent (of the window) or in pixels
Border thickness is the pixel width of the border lines.
Cell padding is the number of pixels between the cell wall and cell contents (text, images, etc.).

Cell spacing is the distance between cell walls.

Header rows can be designated top, left, or both. This is a 3 row, 3 column table with both top and left headers:

    head1 head2 head3
    row title
    123
    234
    row title
    456
    567

The same results can be achieved using the Property Inspector.
Below is a table with 2 rows and 2 columns. The top row has been designated as a header row; the word "Caption" was entered in the Caption box, Align"default"; and the Summary (unseen on the web page but readable by a text reader) is, "This can be read by a text reader.":

Use the Property Inspector to format a table.

  • Make a row or column on your page for each region that you want on your page. Use Modify > Table > Merge Cells or Split Cells (also available in the Property Inspector under Cell) to change the rows and columns to the shapes you want. These regions are containers. You might want regions similar to this example: places for a banner or title at the top, navigation on the side, a footer at the bottom, and a large content area.
Here is a sample of a 3 row, 2 column table:

Use the Property Inspector to format cells in a table.

Here is a sample layout using the same table. This table has 3 rows, 2 columns, is 90% the width of the window, border thickness of 2 pixels, cell padding (distance from the cell wall to the contents) of 10 pixels, and the cells across the first and third rows have been merged:

Place a banner or heading in this space.
This is a good place for a sidebar to provide navigation to other pages in your site to links to outside sites. This is your main content area.
Use this space for a footer with contact, copyright, and last updated information.
