Sample Web Publishing Guidelines

Guidelines are provided for the educational community to be aware of the responsibilities of each student or staff member in publishing content on the Internet. These responsibilities require efficient, ethical and legal utilization of network resources.

Guidelines

  1. All materials will be screened before publication for proper spelling, grammar, accuracy, and appropriateness.
  2. The use of materials from outside sources should be used sparingly and in strict adherence to copyright laws. Unless there is a clear statement that art, photos, or text are "public domain" and available for free use, one should assume that it is copyrighted and permission for use must be obtained.
  3. Links to external sites must be curriculum-related and in compliance with our Acceptable Use Policy.
  4. Published or linked e-mail addresses must be restricted to staff members or to a general group e-mail address that is received by a staff member. Student e-mail addresses will not be published.
  5. Web publication may only include a student's first name and last initial unless the student's parent or guardian has given written and dated permission to use a full name.
  6. No individual pictures of students (video or still) or audio clips will be published without the written and dated permission from the student's parent or guardian.
  7. Identified photographs of students are discouraged; however, if exceptions are made (for example a scholarship or other recognition) written and dated permission from the parent or guardian must be obtained.
  8. Business partnerships may be mentioned but commercial logos may not be displayed on district pages. Links to business partners must be approved by the Webmaster or Technology Director.
  9. All sponsored activities or groups must adhere to the corporation web policies.

Disclaimer

Each school or building home page shall contain a policy disclaimer, link to acceptable use policy, contact information, and updated date.

Responsibility

Principals and program administrators are responsible for being knowledgeable about the content of their building/program Web site and for administering its creation and maintenance.

Staff members who author web pages and teachers supervising student Web authors are responsible for ensuring that their pages meet the requirements of these guidelines for content and format and that all links are functional, up-to-date and linked correctly to their school/building pages.

The Webmaster is responsible for the content and publication of the school or district World Wide Web homepage with final approval of the school principal or corporation Technology Coordinator. All building homepages must be linked to the district homepage.

The corporation Webmaster will maintain the corporation web site. To keep the corporation web server free of outdated or unused files, the corporation Webmaster will periodically purge all files, requiring each school Webmaster to reload new or updated files. Adequate advance notice will be provided to insure that backup files are present and updated. Any maintenance, purging of files, or backups will need to be scheduled with the Network Specialist
.
Any web teacher or administrator will be responsible for proofing student material prior to submission to the Webmaster for publication on the school's World Wide Web homepage.

Any student wishing to publish a web page must first have a teacher willing to sponsor the material before it is submitted to the school's Webmaster. Any corporation employee is responsible for meeting corporation guidelines before submission to the Webmaster.
